A four week project to explore a subject of my choosing. I decided to look at a way of making people, 'Work harder of their food.'

'Under wraps' conceals one secret recipie within it's covers. Unveiled from underneath the black plastic are the ingredients needed.

Fast Food, Made Easy, 10 Minute Meals and Pre-packaged Microwave meals.

All of these are tag lines that appeal to busy people. However, it is my intention to slow food down for you. The book is designed to encourage you to work harder for your food. Whether this be working for a few more pennies, using a more complex preparation process or considering the image of food, through the traditions of a still life.

I miss you postcards

From a very tight knit family and living quite a distance away from home. I often feel a pang of homesickness. However speaking to them on skype bridges that gap. I find it interesting how the pixelated web-cam image of my family makes the distance dissolve. The postcards are a statement about the change in communication from the written, to the spoken to the audio visual.
'Sorry there is bad traffic' and 'I wish I could say I love you...in person.' shows the limits of technology.

In a time of recession, where newly graduated students are finding it ever more difficult to get employment. I decided to use design as a promotional tool for a Business Management graduate. For jobs where employers are used to getting black and white blocks of text I feel like a little bit of creativity could potentially make the difference.

Art Direction

Art Direction Project: A three week project, in partnership with the wonderful illustrator Rosie Gainsborough. The aim was to design the visuals for the music of Oren Ambarchi

We wanted to create a minimal and bleak landscape to replicate the sound scape of Oren's music. We also wanted to find a way to represent that moment in the middle of the night where we awaken, dewy eyed: 'In the Pendulum's Embrace.' To do this we used various layers, glazes and textured glass to blur the viewers vision. The graphics were printed on clear labeling and designed by myself.

We experimented with a few ways of doing this. This is what we have ended up with. I really enjoyed collaborating with Rosie.

Signage brief

A three week project to design some 'signage' for the northern wall of the university of Brighton. It should be White on white, (due to planning permission) and respond in some way to the weather.

To be in keeping with the Modernist building, I decided to create a functional piece. A canopy where people could gather to shelter and to make use of this poorly functioning entrance.

Then to further develop from this idea I wanted the viewer to discover the 'signage' by looking up into the canopy and changing their perspective. I was interested in the connotations of looking up as an empowering posture, during my research I collected a whole archive of powerful, religious portraits of people looking up, groups of spectators and individuals looking up to the stars and into the elements rain or shine. Inside my canopy a spectrum of colour would be viewed (unseen from the outside so not to contravene with planning.) representative of the creativity inside of the university and a treat to look up into.

We had to give the customary third year presentation of our work so far and what influenced us. Here are a collection of my Intros and Inspirations. This was a wonderful day. It was great to see every one's work so far, un-seen personal projects and what interested and influenced them. Everyone was so impressive and interesting. Transatlantic design developments.

A small article I wrote for the Cetld department's newsletter. It was useful to precis the Transatlantic Design project to look at the bare bones of what it is we are doing and present to others what we are doing in 'simple' terms. My Mum was pleased that I had no spelling mistakes. Also, on the 18th of November we did a presentation of our project and our learning's for the Cetld department and this went down well. I think they found us a worthy investment after all. This also raised the issue about publishing our project. A meeting has been arranged and we shall see how this goes...

Butter Mountains and Wine Lakes.

For my summer project I chose the word abundance to illustrate. My interest and focus was on the over production of food, the predominance of certain foods and the issues that surround this. The phrase 'Butter Mountains and Wine Lakes' was used in the headlines during the occurrence of specific food gluts. The overproduction of butter and wine were not the only examples, there were warehouses full of grain and simply no demand. For the project I designed some butter packaging and a wine label to advertise the statement to contextualise the phrase to consumers.

My Sticker Designs for Microsoft.

I was asked to create some sticker designs to be used in a Microsoft advert. The stickers were used to personalize the laptops shown in the advert. I then was asked to come down to London to help work on the Microsoft adverts. Again I worked with a fabulous team of people including David Skinner who I had worked for in New York. The adverts will soon be on our television screens.

MTV Job

I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to work with the amazing people that I did on a job for MTV. We helped form the art department for the skits and promotional material for this years MTV awards. The concept was based around the musical A Westside Story and demanded a gritty New York look. We had the opportunity to help create and dress a variety of sets from the studio built rooftop and junk yard through to the storm soaked alleyway in China town. The talent included Russell Brand, Katy Perry, Ne Yo and Cobra Star ship. I learnt an incredible amount on the job, including how to drive a forklift truck.

During the last couple of weeks in New York although continuing with our 'Transatlantic design' project and now working intensively on the MTV music awards. We still found time to visit some more places in New York and when my parents came to visit for a few days we managed to see a lot of the New York highlights in just a few days. (above: Chinatown, MOMA, apple store, on top of the Rock, Magnolia Bakery cupcakes, The Meat Packing District and Chelsea Market.)

We were lucky enough to speak with Steven Heller for our research project. Steven was an Art director for the New York Times. He is now an educator at SVA New York and writes and edits numerous books about design, illustration and everything in between. We got some great responses from him about design education, he has probably written our project in one of his many books, already.

A belated big THANK YOU to Chris Rose for putting up Millie and I, showing us around RISD and for his incredible contribution to our project. He gave us a whole new perspective on our research project by making us look at the bigger picture. He talked about how politics, geography, globalisation and responsible design are all interlinked and effecting design education. He questioned us on the project and made us analyse our objectives and our original intentions. A lot has changed in two weeks and our project has evolved into a very exsiting exploration and seems to be getting a great response. I am enjoying the oppertunities that emerge from the project and meeting with Chris Rose and touring RISD was one of them.

RISD have a fantastically curated gallery/ museum with such a vast diversity of artifacts, artworks and crafts. I could have spent the whole day there. I spent my whole time at the University with my mouth open aghast at the marvel of the place.

Millie and I visited Rhode Island where Chris Rose ( from RISD and University of Brighton) was our tour guide. We were blown away with the facilities at the university. RISD has an amazing reputation and it was easy to see why. The Nature Lab was a museum of stuffed animals, live animals, skulls and a whole host of other natural forms. Students are able to come into the nature lab and create work from this wonderful primary resource.

Tuesday the 6th of July
As part of my internship for Andrea, I worked on a talking heads show for the Michael Jackson memorial for BET networks. It was a chatshow/ news programme based on all things Michael Jackson all live and shown with the full footage of the memorial service in LA. I was mainly a spectator of the event but it was a great event to be a part of and I met lots of great people from the camera man to the special guests. It was a good behind the scenes insight into television productions.

I collaborated with Millie a graphic designer to create a book that focused on detail in the way that Science does. The intention was to discover something about design in the same way that a scientific experiment would. Our inspiration was Darwin. This project is just the start of a way of working and thinking. We set the project up like an experiment with a hypothesis, equipment list, collecting of evidence, etc. we then bound and branded the book with a gold foiled logo symbolizing Millie, Chloe and Darwin. Perhaps this is a pretentious embelishment?

A letterpress poster about Sacrifice

A piece of creative writing based on the word 'Sacrifice', completely set and printed in letterpress. The concept is that the type written in Modern is sacrificed for the biblical Blackletter typeface as the letters run out. This reflects the idea that we only sacrifice something with the premise of gaining something better. The missing words and the rest of the text is in 8pt small print bellow. I have always liked the idea of making a viewer look closer and work at a concept. By introducing them to a text in a clearly legible size I am enticing them to make that extra effort to read on with the small print.

Based on the idea's developed in Plato's symposium. I re-appropriated the seven Greek intelects used in Plato's symposium, asigning them a new specialist subject within the field of seaweed. The Classical Greek imagery echos the theme. A hand drawn crest adorns the front page as if it were the branding for the symposium and gives importance to the individual speakers.

This is perhaps one of my favourite projects of the year. The brief was to design a book cover, of specified dimensions based on the titles that had previously won Penguin's distinctively odd book prize. I chose: 'Highlights In The History Of Concrete', as I have an interest in Industry and materials. I visited a Concrete Plant to take photographs and from there I developed my design. I vacuum formed a thin disk shape that I wanted to pour concrete into and inlay into the book. However due to the nature of concrete getting the mixture right was a challenge and involved many visits to local builders of Brighton. Who gave me advice and different mixtures to try out. Cracking was unavoidable with such a material and so I photogaphed the disk rather than inlaying it into the book. This better embrased the characteristics of concrete and looked a lot better.

Open Day Poster

Every year the second year Graphic Design and Illustration students all compete to have their designs used for the Arts and Architecture Open Days. This was my entry. I based my poster on the idea of Brighton being a creative catalyst. I staged a scientific experiment based on ionisation and I formed crystals on a metal rod that I had purpose bent. The electric blue colour has connotations of the ocean and so is used to represent Brighton. In contrast their is a placid and transparent beaker that is there to act as a symbol of 'other' establishments. I then photographed the model as the right hand beaker was fizzing away. I am very interested in imagery associated with science and I feel this project demonstrates this.
